Normal Operation
The diagnostic monitor measures the resistance across Pin 10 (Circuit 615,GY/W) and Pin 11 (Circuit 614, GY/O) every time the ignition switch is turnedto the ON position. Normal resistance across these circuits is between 1.5ohms and 2.0 ohms . This resistance comes from the air bag itself(approximately 1.0 ohm ) and the clockspring windings (approximately 0.25to 0.5 ohm per winding, two windings in all). If the resistance acrossthese two circuits exceeds 4.0 ohms , the diagnostic monitor will flashcode 32.
NOTE: The connectors for the air bag and the clockspring have metal springclips that act as shorting bars. These shorting bars are built into the plastichardshell connectors. The shorting bars are designed to short Circuits 614 and615 together when the connectors are not mated. DO NOT attempt to remove theair bag shorting bar and measure the resistance of the air bag.
The clockspring shorting bar may be removed to measure the clockspringresistance. Use extreme care when reinstalling the shorting bar to ensure it isinstalled correctly.

Possible Causes
Excessive resistance across Pins 10 and 11 can be caused by:
- A poor connection where the clockspring connects into the main wiring harness. The clockspring connector at the base of the steering column may have excessive resistance between the male and female terminals in the connector or across the terminal crimps.
- An open circuit or high resistance in the clockspring windings inside the clockspring assembly.
- An open circuit or high resistance in the wiring harness in either Circuit 614 (GY/O) or Circuit 615 (GY/W).
- An open circuit or high resistance in the driver side air bag. DO NOT attempt a direct resistance measurement of the air bag. Follow the diagnostic procedures to determine if the air bag resistance is higher than normal.
Circuit description The p squib circuit consists of the airbag sensor assy center and instrument panel passenger airbag assy. It causes the srs to deploy when the srs deployment conditions are satisfied. Replaced the clockspring but still get the air bag light coming on and going off. Generally comes on when turning right and goes off with hard turns to the left. Bumps may affect it as well. Fault has gone from occasional and brief to now being faulted ~80% of the time. Had the codes read and was told Drivers Side Squib Open. I have read in these forums that de-mating the connectors.

When servicing any airbag system, it is essential to follow the proper Service Manual and/or Diagnostic Manual procedures for diagnosing, testing, and replacing of any component. When diagnosing any airbag squib circuit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) with a DRBIII, the use of the Airbag Load Tool (Special Tool 8310 and 8443) is required. The Airbag Load Tool, used in conjunction with DRBIII are used to isolate and test components and wiring for failure. Only replace the component or wiring that has failed.

- Do not use silicone or any other lubricant spray on or near the clock spring. Lubricants are often used in the clock spring area of the steering column to eliminate noise. Lubricants may have an adverse effect on the clock spring.
- Clock spring centering. Any repair that may disrupt the positioning of the steering wheel with the front wheels will require that the clock spring be centered. This includes clock spring replacement, steering column service, HVAC service, steering gear service, and front suspension crossmember service. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for the clock spring centering procedure.
